Harry Potter — The Hogwarts Express - The magical steam train that transports Harry Potter to the wizard school of Hogwarts — cutting through spectacular countryside — is an actual train line in western Scotland. The West Highland Railway Line runs 42 miles from Fort William to Mallaig. Along the way, it passes by some of the scenery shown in the film, including Ben Nevis (Scotland's highest peak, 4,400 feet) and the lakes and rugged countryside of Glen Nevis. Steal Falls, the waterfall at the base of the mountain, is the locale for Harry's battle with a dragon for the Triwizard Tournament in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

At Glenfinnan Viaduct, the Hogwarts Express steams across 416 yards of raised track over 21 supporting arches. In film #2, Harry and Ron miss the train and fly to Hogwarts in a car that zooms around and through some of the viaduct's 100-foot-high arches. In film #3, the train stalls atop the viaduct, as Dementors stalk the train and torture Harry.

Other scenes filmed in the Highlands include a craggy, desolate hillside with Hagrid's stone hut in Glencoe. Loch Eilt is where they find Hagrid skipping stones across the water.

The end of the line for the Hogwarts Express is not real-life Mallaig, but fictional Hogsmeade Station, filmed at Goathland Station in northeast England. With humble grey stone buildings lining the platform, the station provides a backdrop as Harry and the other students meet Hagrid to catch a boat across the lake to Hogwarts.
